Short Film Research (Mickeys Christmas Carol)

Image
In the short film "Mickeys Christmas Carol"  Camera angles, shots, editing, and mis-en-scene were very widely used to represent the comedy genre. For example, camera angles were used to create a sense of humor or absurdity. A high angle shot can be used to make a character appear small or insignificant, while a low angle shot can be used to make a character appear larger than life. shots can were used to focus on the reactions of characters or to show the absurdity of a situation. For example, a close-up shot to show the expressions of a character reacting to a joke, while a wide shot can be used to show the absurdity of a character's actions in relation to their surroundings. Editing is used to create a sense of pace and to build tension or anticipation. For example, quick cuts between shots can be used to create a fast-paced, energetic atmosphere, while longer shots can be used to build tension or anticipation before a punchline. Mis-en-scene establishes the setting

Short Film Research (Bao)

Image
In the short film "Bao," the filmmakers make use of a variety of camera angles, shots, editing techniques, and mis-en-scène elements to create a visually striking and emotionally impactful story. One notable aspect of the film's cinematography is the use of close-up shots to highlight the emotions of the characters and to draw the viewer's attention to specific details. For example, close-up shots of the mother's face are used to show her love and affection for the dumpling, as well as her sadness and loneliness when it leaves her. The film also makes use of overhead shots to show the relationships between characters and their environment. These shots allow the viewer to see the layout of the mother's kitchen and the dumpling's interactions with the objects around it. In terms of editing, "Bao" makes use of cutaways and flashbacks to help convey the passage of time and to provide context for the story. For example, the film uses cutaways to sho

Short Film Research (Monday)

Image
The short film "Monday" by Parable is a visually striking and emotionally powerful work that explores the theme of loss and grief. The film is an award winning film. It is known as "inspiring and funny".  One of the key elements that contributes to the film's impact is the use of common sound, common mis-en-scene, and common editing techniques.  In terms of sound, the film uses a number of common techniques to create a cohesive and immersive experience. For example, the film uses diegetic sound, which is sound that originates from within the film's world, to create a sense of realism and immersion. This includes the use of dialogue and ambient sounds, such as the sound of footsteps or traffic.  The film also uses non-diegetic sound, which is sound that does not originate from within the film's world, to create a sense of mood and atmosphere. This includes the use of music and sound effects, such as the sound of a clock ticking or the sound of a phone r

Short Film Research (Big Catch)

Image
When looking for comedy short films on the websites given, we were unable to find any pertaining to comedy My team and I decided that it would be best to just look for one on Youtube rather than struggling to find one on the websites. Before going to Youtube we checked the regular internet where we mainly found films in our genre but they were full length. The first film we found on Youtube was "Big Catch." This interested us first because of the thumbnail. The thumbnail for this short was a picture of a man sitting with headphones and a shark behind him smiling. Seeing this, we automatically assumed that the shark would be trying to eat this man, but we did not know how it planned on going about it. In this film, there is no dialogue but there is diegetic sound where we can hear the birds making noise, the squeaking of the the shark on the deck, and the shark screaming as he realizes he is about to be thrown back into the ocean. Since this was an animated film, a lot of edi

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Le Jetée is a black and white science fiction short film that was directed by Chris Marker in 1962. The film tells the story of a man who is subjected to experiments involving time travel after being imprisoned in a dystopian future society. Through the use of still images, the film explores themes of memory, identity, and the effects of trauma. 12 Monkeys, on the other hand, is a full-length feature film that was released in 1995 and directed by Terry Gilliam. Like Le Jetée, the film is based on the premise of time travel and explores themes of memory, identity, and the effects of trauma. However, 12 Monkeys expands upon these themes and adds additional plot elements, such as a dystopian future and a complex plot involving multiple characters and their interconnected stories. One key difference between the two films is their visual style. Le Jetée is a black and white film that primarily consists of still images, with only a few brief moments of movement. In contrast, 12 Monkeys is

How to make a short film

Image
In the video, the host, Ryan Connolly, discussed some important things to consider in a short film. The ones that stood out to me most were- emotion/ conflict, climax, jump scares, limited resources, storyboards and scripts, tone (lighting and costume), safety , sound (and not too much or too little dialogue), and a good relationship with your crew. Emotion and conflict are best because they add to the story and allow a relationship and understanding amongst the audience and the film. The climax and the emotion work hand in hand because they give life and a deeper understanding of the story. Climax either builds tension or releases it. A jump scare here and there just keeps the audience engaged. In a short film, he budget wont be the same as a full length blockbuster type of film. Your budget will be very limited including your resources. Location, props, casting, etc... So when creating a short film, it's important to know you wont have all the resources you want, but you'll

Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Image
The first film was produced in 2005 and is a short film. 9 is a 2005 computer animated science fiction short film created by Shane Acker as a student project at the UCLA Animation Workshop. Tim Burton saw the film and later produced a feature-length adaptation also titled 9 in 2009, directed by Acker and distributed by Focus Features. 9 is a rag doll who appears to be the last of his kind, living in the ruins of a decaying, post-apocalyptic Earth. Hunting 9 is the Cat Beast, a mechanical monster wearing a cat's skull for a head. It appears to be guided by a small glowing talisman which it holds in its claws. 9 (the full film) is also a computer-animated science film directed by Shane Acker, written by Pamela Pettler and produced by Jim Lemley, Tim Burton, and Dana Ginsburg.  A scientist is ordered by his dictator  to create a robot in the apparent name of progress, and so the scientist creates the B.R.A.I.N., a highly intelligent robot. The dictator seizes it upon its apparent com

Our Final Decision

Image
After talking it out with my group we have made our decision. We have decided to go with comedy as our genre. It’s a little out of the ordinary but we think we can make it work. We have talked it through, went back and forth but finally made a decision. My team and I decided on this genre because we wanted something different from a regular crime movie. In a regular movie we knew that we would have a leader, a kidnapping, etc. I’m our comedy we thought we would make it kind of a reality show. In this sense we would have breaks in our movie where we go into “rooms” where we talk about/ complain about what’s happening. We also thought about having a shorter kidnapping scene since it wouldn’t be revolved about that for the most part. My team and I personally think we are very funny so we think that this genre would fit all of us. When we are by ourselves we always life and have a good time so hopefully it will be the same while filming. Since this will be our longest film we plan to put a

Gente Research (Comedy)

Image
My group and I are also researching comedy. As much as we want action, we also need to laugh. A comedy would also be a lot easier for us since we can just be ourselves. Comedy movies have a lot of close- ups, pans, long shots, and zooms. Close ups allow you to lead your audience into a more intimate setting. You can literally bring your audience closer to the action. And it emphasizes the importance of what we see. But as the push continues, it all breaks, letting viewers know they're watching a comedy movie.Long shots  give an overall context to the scene and usually lets viewers know that what we’re seeing right now isn’t the whole picture... until it zooms all the way out. Static shots, or stand still shots, build suspense. In comedy movies it allows room for the characters to correct themselves or something, Almost like a "wait for it" moment. Zooms emphasize expressions shown throughout the film. Props used in comedy films range from nothing to everything- like

Genre Research (Mystery)

Image
Our film hopes to have a surprise unexpected twist and in search of maximizing our chances of creating a good suspenseful scene we researched the mystery genre.. The camera angles, movements, and shots commonly used in mystery consist of: High and low angles, Close-up and Extreme Close-up shots, Dolly movements, over the shoulder shots, and POV shots. Directors like to use high angles to prove authority and power. Low angles are used to show weakness and fear. The whole idea in mystery movies is to show the suspense and fear of the characters, and the camera angles are very important. Close-ups and extreme close-ups are used so the audience can convey the emotions and allow the audience to kind of depict the characters mindset, can be used to give another meaning behind a character's words. Dolly Movements create a feeling of tension and urgency. Over the shoulder shots show either what's lingering in the back or we can get a point of view of what's going on in from of th

Genre Research (True Crime)

Image
Since our film has something to do with someone planning to kill people and drug cartels in a sense, True Crime is another genre we should research. The camera angles, movements, and shots commonly used in True crime are: High and low angles, Close-up and Extreme Close-up shots, Dolly movements, Handheld shots, and over the shoulder shots. Directors like to use high angles to prove authority and power. Low angles are used to show weakness and fear. The whole idea in Crime Movies is to show the power and fear, they're very important. Close-ups and extreme close-ups are used so the audience can convey the emotions and allow the audience to kind of depict the characters mindset, can be used to give another meaning behind a character's words. Dolly Movements create a feeling of tension and urgency. Handheld shots aren't usually still. They are shaky and unstable; it gives the effect of disorientation and uncertainty. Over the shoulder shots show either what's lingering i

Genres I Would Like to Research

Image
The three genres my team and I would like to research are true crime, comedy, and mystery. My team and I chose these 3 genres because we are unsure about how we want go go about our film. Crime thriller is our top one. This is because there are so many crime/ cartel movies out that we could get inspiration from and it wouldn't be too hard to find something to do along those lines, but we could also make it a comedy. There aren't many crime movies that are comedies but my team and I were talking about how we could make it funny. One idea we had was making it like a reality TV show where they have the side interviews or the main character goes off to the side and has their own thoughts nobody else could hear. The last idea we had was mystery. This was actually a random one to throw in there. We were thinking we could start off with a death and have detectives/cops solve the murder and have flash backs in between while solving it. We were also thinking about doing drama. My team
